Yesterday’s meeting in Riyadh between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump coincides with the 80th anniversary of a defining moment in U.S.-Saudi relations: the 1945 meeting between King Abdulaziz and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard the USS Quincy. That historic encounter took place as President Roosevelt was returning from the Yalta Conference, where he had met with Churchill and Stalin to discuss the post-war order in Europe. It would also mark Roosevelt’s final trip abroad. Since then, the United States and Saudi Arabia have cultivated a multifaceted partnership grounded in robust commercial ties—particularly in the energy sector. American companies have long played a central role in the development of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas industry and continue to be key players in the Kingdom’s broader transformation—partnering on infrastructure, logistics, clean energy, and digital innovation. Educational exchange, including the thousands of Saudi students who have studied in the United States, has further deepened cultural and professional links between the two nations.
As Saudi Arabia accelerates its economic diversification under Vision 2030, international businesses are finding unprecedented opportunities in sectors ranging from renewable energy and healthcare to construction and financial services.
